Story Shorts

Short films for ages 7-11, and older

Film and television play a central role in children's lives and cultural understanding. Children love sharing the experience of watching films. Story Shorts 1 and Story Shorts 2 (produced in response to teachers' requests for more material) both explore and demonstrate the richness of short films as texts to support the development of children's literacy and cineliteracy. Story Shorts 1 features five short films (four animations and one live action), accompanied by notes for teachers that support their use in the classroom. Ideal for Key Stage 2, the films, 3 to 14 minutes long, have been carefully selected to explore different ways of telling a story.

Story Shorts 2 includes a carefully selected collection of 12 short films between 2 and 10 minutes long, primarily aimed at children in Years 3 - 6, but is also suitable for older children, covering a wide range of issues and subjects and range from early archive footage to 21st Century films.

The booklets enclosed with the DVDs introduce ways of thinking about and teaching with short films. Web pages for Story Shorts 2 contain further teaching guidelines, student worksheets and additional materials. These guidelines are available to everyone, but to access student worksheets and additional materials you need the username and password supplied with the DVD pack.
