Good writing is clearly the key to success in most school subjects and is therefore the major target for many schools' action plans. In particular, the focus currently is on improving boys' attainment in their written work.

Starting from important general issues on the teaching of writing, this publication, written by two well known NATE members, gives practical guidance for helping pupils to plan and structure their work. Illustrations are given of individual pieces of work with commentary on ways of moving children on in their expression and composition.

The differing approaches, interests and writing styles of girls and boys are considered and strategies for inspiring all pupils' interest in writing are suggested.
