As with all publications from CLPE, this text is drawn from action research by practising teachers. Book Power Y1 contains ten chapters, each with a text as a focus for a unit of work within the literacy curriculum, the final chapter being an author study of Quentin Blake.
The introduction covers the variety of teaching approaches used throughout the text to support the units of work. While teachers will know many of these, the descriptions not only outline them but also provide insight into the pedagogy alongside practical approaches and modifications for use in Year 1. This bank of approaches enables teachers to create a sequence for all literacy teaching with any chosen quality text. The rest of the book models how these techniques are used with the individual texts, which include well known favourites of Year 1 teachers, such as Beegu, Where the Wild Things Are and The Snail and The Whale.
Each chapter gives an overview of the selected text, along with clear aims and links to the Primary Framework objectives. There is an overview of the teaching approaches selected and timescale of the unit, which is then broken down into sessions with the teaching approaches described in relation to the chosen text. The accompanying CD contains resources related to each text, which are fairly simple and straightforward but save the teacher the bother of creating them and could easily be adapted for other texts.
All teachers will find this a valuable resource, no matter what their knowledge or experience, but for those who find literacy teaching and planning from the framework a bit of a challenge, it is invaluable.
