How can learning platforms can enhance teaching and learning?

The ICT Committee investigates

There are still opportunities to contribute to this NATE project. Our initial workshop has now taken place but the ICT Committee  welcomes interest from teachers - read on to find out how to take part.

Learning platforms, virtual learning environments, MLEs - the names and the initials are often confusing. Schools should now have their own learning platform - but how are they really being used by teachers of English? NATE’s ICT Committee is especially interested in solutions, discoveries and successes from an English teacher's perspective - things that might point the way to models of good practice.Visit the Vital site

Could you contribute to this project? NATE welcomes interest from teachers who have experience of learning platforms, whether you are just getting to grips with yours for the first time or have been using one for years. The project opened with a workshop in Coventry on Tuesday 2 March. Whether or not you attended that initial meeting, we welcome contributions; the investigation will provide facilities to share materials, discussions and results throughout the project. For an idea of what this might involve and produce, see the materials from the NATE 'Hard to Teach' project.

What might you gain from joining the project?

  • Professional development
  • Sharing stimulating ideas with other committed colleagues
  • Time away from the classroom to gather thoughts and meet others
  • Prestige for your school and a useful addition to your personal CV

What will NATE and the profession gain from your involvement?

  • A range of classroom-tested practice
  • The opportunity to disseminate good ideas across the country
  • The establishment of a professional network to further these developments
If you wish to contribute by joining the online community, simply use the email address below to indicate your interest, including the name of your school and the learning platform you use.

What will happen next?

  • The initial workshop in Coventry on Tuesday 2 March 2010 launched the project.
  • The workshop delegates have identified topics to investigate in their own institutions.
  • The outcomes will be shared with a wider group of interested teachers and others so that the investigation has as broad a base as possible, chiefly by using a Vital community forum.
  • Members of the NATE team will work with teachers to help produce case studies.
  • We plan to hold a second workshop to report results in the summer of 2010.

If you are interested in finding out more, please email Tom Rank, Chair of the ICT Committee.

NATE is grateful for support from Becta and Vital for this project and a contribution from RM, providers of the Kaleidos learning platform.
