With a new website, refreshed publications and inspiring events approaching, we’re committed to supporting English teachers with resources, professional development, and a shared vision for the future, says Anthony Cockerill, Director of NATE
It’s been three months since I began my new role as Director and Subject Lead at NATE. As I said in my New Year’s message back in January, it’s an honour to build on NATE’s outstanding legacy, and I’m excited to collaborate with our incredible community of educators, who bring such passion, experience, and wisdom to the English teaching profession.
Whether you’re a long-time member or a first-time visitor, we’re excited to welcome you to our brand-new website, designed to help and support you. NATE publishes some of the best long-form writing about English teaching, optimised here for seamless reading on your desktop, tablet, or phone. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll be updating the content regularly, so there’ll be something new to inspire and educate you each time you visit.
Visitors can learn more about the benefits of NATE membership by exploring our pages, news and views, while members can log-in and read in-depth features and reviews, as well as accessing our archive through their membership account, accessible by clicking on the profile icon at the top right of the menu.
We’ll continue to bring together the best writing about our subject pedagogy in Teaching English, and we’re planning a visual refresh for the magazine later this year too. Our hugely successful academic journal, English in Education, is now available to members in a fully digital format, although a print edition can still be purchased directly from the publisher.
Working Groups, which have played a crucial role in the NATE’s history, shape our responses to what’s going on nationally. Members can join wherever their location and help to foster the collaborative spirit that has always defined NATE, ensuring that teachers and students alike can thrive. We’re planning to keep you updated on the progress of the Working Groups through the new website.
There are some exciting events planned for this year: the NATE Conference takes place on Tuesday 1st July 2025 at Kingston University and the NATE ITE Conference is on Friday November 7th 2025 at the University of Bedfordshire, on the theme of ‘writing pedagogy for trainee English teachers’. We’ll also be launching a series of online CPD events and reviving our in-person Teach Meets so you can be part of a supportive and well-informed network.
This year, I’m committed to supporting our community with professional development opportunities, valuable resources, and innovative ideas to strengthen and inspire your practice. Whether through our digital platforms, print publications, or events, I’m looking forward to exploring new ways to connect, share, and advocate for approaches that make a meaningful difference in our classrooms.
